A tight, clean, sound copy in black and white illustrated white wraps with minor overall wear plus some very light creasing of the front cover along the spine edge plus some very light soiling of the cover overall plus there is a bookstore price stamped on the front endpaper in black ink plus there is the original owner's name in blue ink on the front endpaper plus there is some very light soiling on the top outside paper edges. This is the author's first novel. A physical and spiritual coming-of-age story. The main character is a young boy who lives in a small New Mexico town. An old woman who is seen by the local community as both a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic, and a bruja or witch, moves in with his family at the invitation of his parents. While there, she is able to provide him with the courage to face childhood bigotry, diabolical possession, the moral collapse of his brother and many violent deaths. She also provides guidance to him as he explores the family ties that affect and bind him and discovers secrets of the pagan legacy that lies as deeply within Latin American culture as the Catholicism he has been raised in. Illustrated with black and white drawings by Dennis Martinex. The author is a winner of the Premio Quioto Sol national Chicano literary award.
