Bertram and Mack Reynolds Ace Books New York, New York, USA 1967 Mass Market Paperback Very Good, No Jacket First Mass Market Paperback Edition AS2 - An Ace Double edition first printing mass market paperback book in very good condition. No additional printings are indicated. Covers by Kelly Freas and Peter Michael. A tight, clean, sound copy in color wraps with very minor overall shelf wear with some very light scattered surface chipping on the spine plus there is some yellowing of the paper plus there is a small, light stain (about 0.25"x0.5") on the spine. This book contains "Nebula Alert" by A. Bertram Chandler and "The Rival Rigelians" by Mack Reynolds. "Nebula Alert" is about a humanoid race who are technically free citizens of the Galactic Empire. The reality though is that they are slaves prized for their unique ability to transmit acquired knowledge by heredity. A space mercenary is hired by a galactic abolition society to take a cargo of these slave citizens home but the task is complicated by their pursuit by interstellar slavers as well as the aliens' own ideas that include mutiny and high treason. All of this comes to a head when the ship passes close to the Horsehead Nebula where time, space, and dimensions are warped and twisted. The author is a winner of four Australian Ditmar Science Fiction Achievement Awards as well as the Seiun Sho, the premier Japanese science fiction award plus he was also especially noted for his science fiction short stories. By the author of the John Grimes "Hornblower of Space" novels and "From Sea to Shining Star," "Space Mercenaries," "The Road to the Rim," and "Alternate Orbit." 121p. "The Rival Rigelians" is about a tem of experts form Earth who have the job of raising backward planets to the technological level of the home planet. Their assignment is to a system of two settled planets. One of these planets has a culture comparable to the Italian city states of Europe's high medieval era. The other planet in the system has a technology comparable to the Aztecs of old Earth. Though they have the advantage of far more advanced technologies, these two peoples quickly master the new technologies and even go on to become actual threats to the mother world. This title originally appeared in a shorter version titled "Adaptation" in Analog magazine. This author was notorious for his militant radical social ideas and used his science ficiton writing to speculate on solutions to the world's socio-economic and political problems.
