The dust jacket is in very good+ condition with very minor overall shelf wear in the form of very, very light rubbing. This is the story of Holocaust survivors in New York in the early 1950s and their narrator. He is a magazine writer who finds himself in love with a young woman simultaneously in love with another, older man and Holocaust survivor. The story has bizarre twists and turns and unusual characters reflecting the author's skill as a storyteller. Translated by the author and Nili Wachtel. This book was originally published serially in 1981-83. The author is a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. BU4 - A hard cover first American edition book in very good condition with a dust jacket in good+ condition. A tight, clean, sound copy in red cloth covered boards with gold lettering and a graphic on the front and gold and black lettering and graphics on the spine with minor overall shelf wear. The dust jacket is in good+ condition with minor overall shelf wear mainly in the form of some light edge wear mainly around the spine top and bottom edges plus a closed tear (about 0.5") on the top edge near the right corner plus another closed tear (less than 0.5") on the back on the bottom edge in about the middle plus a small rectanble on the front endflap where the price was cut out. A novel about Poland in the late 1860s and on. A Polish count takes part in an unsuccessful revolt against Russia. His lands are confiscated and leased to a pious Jew who made his living as a grain merchant. This merchant recognizes that the times are changing as Poland was leaving the Middle Ages behind as it build railroads, highways and modern cities. The sale of timber off the land forms the basis of a fortune but the Merchant's inate conservatism makes him suspicious of the new revolutionary ideas that begin to rise up also. The author is a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
