Translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. The story of a remarkable woman, Milena Jesenka. She was Franz Kafka's great love and was a beautiful, politically committed, enormously talented journalist. She took an early stand against Nazism and so was arrested in 1939 and sent to the concentration camp in Ravensbruck. She died in the camp 3 weeks before D-Day.
