A book about the situation of women in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The main character is a 45 year old woman who is no longer needed as a wife and mother and now must confront the threat of annihilation, the terrors of old age, and death. She is alone with her children grown up and her husband abroad working for several months. At the urging of her husband she finds a job. She ends up acting as interpreter for an international conferance on food. The job also leads to her flying to Turkey for another conference and she then goes on to Spain for an affair with a younger man. None of this summer of exploration, freedom, and self-discovery turns out the way she expects. She rejects the stereotypes of femininity and her personal crisis becomes a confrontation of her with herself.
