Years later while she is working as an English instructor and becomes involved with a Russian immigrant. As his English improves, she is drawn to him while at the same time she is frightened by his revelations about his own difficult past. The author is a winner of two Pushcart Prizes, a General Electric Foundation Award for Young Writers, a Whiting Writer's Award for her short fiction, two American Academy of Arts and Letters Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Awards, and the Rome Prize in Literature.
