A3 - A French language edition trade paperback book in very good condition. A tight, clean, sound copy in color illustrated white wraps with minor overall shelf wear with some rubbing and light soiling of the covers and some very slight edge wear of the covers. The author dedicated 'Effroyables Jardins' (Strange Gardens), this bright, moving and metaphorical anti-war short story to the memory of his grandfather, a veteran of Verdun, and to his father, a former fighter in the French resistance. They opened wide their memory of the horror of war and is yet learned German, because they felt that Manichaeism in history is nonsense. A sequel to 'Effroyables Jardins' (Strange Gardens) was published in 2002 by Editions Joelle Losfeld under the title 'Aimer à peine' (Just Love). Michel Quint was born in 1949. He has published twenty books (crime novels and short stories) including 'Sanctus', 'Cake-Walk' and 'Lundi perdu' (Lost Monday) published by Rivages Noir. He received the Grand Prize for crime fiction in 1989. 'Effroyables Jardins' (Strange Gardens) was adapted for film by Jean Becker in 2003. 'L'Homme de la pampa' (Man of the Pampa) is well known for its inventiveness and the story follows the adventures of a magician who toys with volcanoes. The hero, Fernandez y Guanamiru, returns to the family estate after a short trip. Once there he builds a huge building and creates an incredible, surreal park. But after a short time he becomes a little bit bored and so he decides to build a volcano. This does not happen quite as he planned and so he decides to travel to Europe with his volcano. In Europe he meets some amazing people and experiences an amazing number of surreal adventures. It is here that he also meets a mysterious young woman, 'Line du Petit Jour' (Line of Dawn). Jules Supervielle (1884-1960) was a French author born in Uruguay. His divided his time between Montevideo, where he was born, and Paris, where he was educated. His fiction is noted for its freshness and originality, a result of his use of South American 'magical realism'. The stories in his books all deal with grand subjects but with a style that is simple and which is noted for the use of fantasy, allegory and myth. His best know novels are 'L'Homme de la pampa' (1923) and 'Le Survivant' (1928). He also published collections of short stories including 'L'Enfant de la haute mer' (1931) and 'Le Petit Bos' (1942) as well as plays such as 'Bolivar' (1936) and collections of poetry, notably 'Poèmes de la France malheureuse' (1941). 4.9"x7.4", table (table of contents), du même auteur (by the same author), 192 pages. 3 Le Messie De Dune (Dune Messiah)
Herbert, Frank
Siudmak, W.
Editions Robert Laffont France 1972
Mass Market Paperback
Good, No Jacket as Issued
12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

BW3 - A tight, clean, sound copy in color wraps with minor overall shelf wear with some very light overall rubbing of the covers plus there is some light yellowing of the paper edges plus there is some light foxing of the front and back endpapers plus there is a used bookstore price in blue ink on the front endpaper plus there are large closed tears on the back endpaper and freepaper. Cover art by W. Siudmak. This is a French language edition of "Dune Messiah," the 2nd volume in the author's Dune series. The story of Maud'dib continues on the desert planet Arrakis. Its intricate social order and strange threatening environment are the backdrop for Maud'dib's efforts to deal with an almost unimaginable power brought about by the Bene Gesserit religious order's human breeding effrot to create a superbeing and his family's pending ascendency to the position of Emperor of the Imperium. This superbeing has come to fruition in Paul Atréides, now Paul Maud'dib, and he must now deal with his role as a sort of living god, a Messiah for the Fremen, and its implied need for his sacrifice. SCW10960

CC1 - A French language text trade paperback book in very good condition. A tight, clean, sound copy with minor overall shelf wear with some light creasing on the spine, some creasing on the front cover at the bottom right corner, and a small dent on the back cover at the top left corner. Since the Second World War, the need has arisen for a collective reflection on the ethics of science. In 1955, the Russell-Einstein Manifesto gave birth to the Pugwash movement, whose 'Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs' were begun as a way to foster 'the moral conscience of science'. These conferences established a regular forum that has been tolerant and open to scholars and concerned citizens. This organization has especially focused on reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking solutions to global security threats. Pugwash shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 for its work on nuclear disarmament. Today the issue of the ethics of science has become primarily relevant for bioethics. Advances in medicine and biology continue to offer an increasing ability to manipulate living things and the body has come to be treated as a source of spare parts. Genetic engineering is proving capable of making a living thing, almost to order. Because technical barriers no longer protect the privacy of the body and the dignity of the human person, it has became even more urgent to continue to develop and understand the legal and ethical bounds in science. Other concerns also underly the scientific ethical movement. These includes concerns over the conduct of researchers because cases of misconduct (fraud, plagiarism) have raised the alarm about the possible deterioration of standards of the profession. As a related concern, there is more attention that needs to be paid to 'questionable practices'. Like most major countries, France has implemented various ethics committees. What should be their modern role be? More concretely, how do we define a reasonable middle ground and between two dangers: the danger of doing too much (drifting towards unproductive 'political correctness') and the danger of not doing enough (alibis provided by collective work and merely 'decorative' ethical declarations)? On this important subject, Gérard Toulouse has written this book of reflection and humorous anecdotes intended to provide a lively overview of scientific research. The text also includes essential documents on the subject of scientific ethics. Gérard Toulouse, a physicist, director of research at the ENS-Ulm, was among the first members of the 'Comité d'éthique pour les sciences' (CNRS), the Ethics Committee for Science, established in 1994. His research topics have ranged from the physics of condensed matter to studies of the brain and cognition, and his work has earned international recognition. 5.5"x8.9", 240 pages.
