A book that examines the technical inventions which lead to the Industrial Revolution and the resulting social revolution. This social revolution created a new class of workers, a group of free men who worked with their hands but did not own the means of production. This book also describes what conditions of life wer like for the new urban proletariat such as the uprooting of families, the poverty, the crowded squalor of facotry and home, and the lack of education which speeded the process of demoralization and led to the gradual isolation of the working class form the rest of society. The author also show this isolation created a self-awareness among the working class which led to the development of organized labor.
