A tight, clean, sound copy in green and brown wraps with minor overall shelf wear with some creasing and edge wear with chipping on the covers plus some light tannning of the spine and outside paper edges. Oswaldo Rodrigues Cabral was born in Laguna, Brazil in 1903, having graduated in 1919 from Santa Catarina State Normal School. Ten years later he earned his PhD in Medicine in Rio de Janeiro. Devoting himself to work in the Joinville clinic, he still found time to resurch and study Brazilian history. In 1938 with his book he published his first book, 'Santa Catarina'. The quality of this work led to its being included in the Brazilian Collection, the major representatio of Brazilian national culture at that time. Shortly afterwords he published 'Lagoon and Other Essays', followed by a series of works, eventually reaching more than fifty, mostly about the history of Santa Catarina, but also including papers about medicine, folklore, anthropology and even fiction. He has been elected state representative in two legislative sessions and in 1952 was made Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine of the Faculty of Law. He was a founder of the School of Philosophy and has been the chairman of this department several times. He originally associated himself with that department's school of Ancient and Medieval History but transferred a year later to Anthropology. At about the time this book was published, he was devoting himself to the foundation and installation of the Institute of Anthropology. Professor, journalist and orator, in his later years he has divided his energies between work as this department's chairman and the study of Brazil's history. This book is a reissue of his first book similar in organization but edited and updated with significant new research and interpretation.
